The Varanasi–Kolkata Expressway is going to change how roads connect in eastern India. This ambitious NHAI project is being built as a greenfield corridor under National Highway NH319B as part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana. The highway is one of the most important infrastructure projects in the area because it is meant to shorten travel times and stimulate business.

The Route and Main Features of the Expressway

The highway will be around 610 kilometers long, starting in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and ending near Uluberia, which is close to Kolkata in West Bengal. The proposed expressway route will go through important districts in Bihar and Jharkhand, such as Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Chatra, and Dhanbad, before entering West Bengal.

This road is unique since it is a greenfield route, meaning it was created from scratch and not on top of existing highways. This lets planners make roads that are straighter, go around busy places, and make travel easier. What happened? The trip from Varanasi to Kolkata will take 6 to 7 hours less time than it does now.

The corridor will be six lanes wide, have access control, and be built for fast traffic. This will make it a safe and efficient way to convey both freight and people.

Timeline, Status, and Effects on the Area

Right now, land acquisition is happening in several states. Some sections have already started work on the ground, especially in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The goal is to finish the highway by 2027, however certain parts may open before that in stages.

Because it is so important strategically, the state of the highway is being keenly watched. When this project is done, it will not only make it easier to get from Varanasi to Kolkata, but it will also take some of the stress off of NH2 and other busy roads.

This endeavor is not only about speed, though. It's a means for infrastructure to grow in poor areas. Farmers and small businesses will have better access to markets, speedier supply chains, and more jobs because of new highways. The influence on the rest of the world? Local economies that are stronger.

Conclusion

When the Varanasi–Kolkata Expressway is finished, it will be more than just a road. It will be a lifeline that connects cultural, commercial, and industrial centers across eastern India. With NH319B taking shape, the region's future is already on the map as one that is speedier and more connected.
