Tata Hitachi, the joint venture between Tata Motors and Japan’s Hitachi Construction Machinery, wants India to become a big hub for manufacturing. The company says India needs to focus on Skill, Scale and Solutions to achieve this.
BKR Prasad from Tata Hitachi says India must train people at every level — from machine operators and customers to manufacturers and suppliers. China grew its industry not just because of exports, but because local demand created jobs and attracted skilled workers. “India needs strong local demand to build the right skills,” he says.
India also needs scale. Many important parts, like precise hydraulics, are still imported from Japan, Korea or Europe. This makes machines more expensive. By making more parts in India, the cost can come down, and the local industry can grow.
Customer demands today are not limited to machines; Customers want smart, connected and easy solutions. Tata Hitachi believes in providing total solutions, not selling products, which will require improved production and industry collaboration.
Tata Hitachi has been in India since 1984. Unlike some companies that use India only to export products, Tata Hitachi has focused on making machines in India and supporting the local industry. Exports now make up about 5% of sales, but the company plans to triple this by 2028–29.
Tata Hitachi is also working on electric and alternative fuel machines, including battery-powered and tethered excavators. These machines are being tested in India and more models will come soon. The company follow its Customer Interest First (CIF) approach, making sure machines are reliable, long-lasting and cost-effective.
Tata Hitachi has a 23% share of India's excavator market, with mining representing greater than 30% of this segment. Electrification is a significant thread in this business as Tata Hitachi has local testing of battery-powered excavators and off-loading global battery dump trucks.
Tata Hitachi is steadfast in their belief that India can be a global manufacturing hub if only it builds Skill, Scale and Solutions. Tata HItachi's focus on innovation, exports and smart solutions are helping India grow its industry and become self reliant.
