Tamil Nadu is planning to build a new 142 km highway with six lanes to connect Chennai and Vellore. This Chennai Vellore highway will make travel faster, reduce traffic and help industries move goods more easily. It is one of the big Tamil Nadu infrastructure projects aimed at boosting growth in the state.
The highway will begin near Oragadam at the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road and end at NH38 in Vellore. On the way, it will pass through important industrial areas like Oragadam Industrial Hub and Cheyyar SIPCOT Industrial Park. Land is already being acquired for a 68-kilometer stretch from Oragadam to Cheyyar. The planned route is similar to the old Chennai–Salem Expressway project, which was later dropped.
The main purpose of this project is to make transport of goods quicker and easier. Trucks carrying goods from Kattupalli and Ennore ports will save time as they move towards industrial hubs. At present, the Sriperumbudur–Vellore stretch of the Chennai–Bengaluru Highway faces heavy traffic. This new road will reduce that load and help businesses move their goods smoothly.
From Oragadam, the road will go through Cheyyar SIPCOT and then reach Vellore. Work has already started to acquire land for some parts. For the remaining stretch, a study will decide whether existing roads should be widened or a new road should be built.
The Tamil Nadu Road Development Company has called for a study to plan the best way forward. This study will check if the project should use upgraded existing roads or build fresh new ones. This step ensures the road will be useful for industries while also taking care of people living nearby.
The Chennai Vellore highway is expected to bring big benefits. It will attract industries, create jobs, and make transport of goods cheaper and quicker. With better roads, exports and business activities in Tamil Nadu will also grow. This project will play an important role in the state’s dream of becoming a stronger industrial hub.
Exact dates are not yet announced. But since land work and studies have already begun, construction could start soon. The road is likely to be built in stages so that people and businesses face fewer problems during the process.
The 142-kilometer six-lane Chennai Vellore highway will make travel easier, reduce congestion, and give a strong push to industries. For workers, transporters, and businesses, this project promises faster movement and new opportunities. It's a big step for Tamil Nadu to build better roads and support growth.
