Cabinet Approves Rs. 4,447 Crore Mokama-Munger Highway Project

The government has approved the Mokama-Munger Highway Project, a big step to make travel and transport easier in Eastern Bihar. This highway will be 82.4 km long, cost Rs. 4,447.38 Crore and will be a 4 lane highway built under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM). It is also part of the Buxar Bhagalpur High Speed Corridor, aiming to improve connectivity and trade.

Better Roads, Faster Travel

The new highway will connect Mokama, Barahiya, Lakhisarai, Jamalpur, Munger and Bhagalpur. This region is growing as an industrial area with important facilities like:

• Ordnance Factory in Munger
• Jamalpur Locomotive Workshop
• ITC Food Processing Hub in Munger
• Bhagalpur Silk and Textile Industry

Farmers and businesses around Barahiya will also benefit because goods can move faster and cheaper.

Quick and Safe Journeys

The highway is designed for high-speed travel, allowing vehicles to move at 80 km/h on average and a maximum speed of 100 km/h. Travel time between Mokama and Munger will reduce to about 1.5 hours.

The road will be safe and smooth, helping both passenger vehicles and trucks. This project aligns with government initiatives such as PM Gati Shakti and Bharatmala, which propose to establish a world-class highway system across India.

Employment and Economic Growth

Through this project we anticipate the following job outputs to be generated;

• 14.83 lakh man-days of direct employment   
• 18.46 lakh man-days of indirect employment    

Going further, better roads will attract industries and businesses to locate along the route. Farmers will have better access to bring their crops to market, which will lead to growth in local commerce. Overall, this project would provide a better connection of Eastern Bihar to the rest of India by providing an enhanced economy and better opportunities to do business.
