The construction equipment sector is gaining prominence in India as a global manufacturing hub, encouraged by growing volumes of exports and strategic trade initiatives. The Government has recognized the industry as having high potential and export orientation and has highlighted the emergence of India in international markets.
At a session on export competitiveness organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Indian Construction Equipment Manufacturers' Association during EXCON 2025, Shri Vimal Anand, Joint Secretary at the Department of Commerce, commended the strong performance of the sector abroad. He stated that negotiations on trade agreements with countries including Chile, Peru, Canada, Mercosur, Mexico, and the Maldives are underway, with completion to be achieved within one year. Anand called upon the manufacturers to tap the frameworks to boost exports.
The scale of India's construction equipment exports is huge. Deepak Shetty, Chairman, CII's Council on Manufacturing Excellence and President, ICEMA, pointed out that Indian equipment now reaches over 135 countries, demonstrating the manufacturing capability and quality standards conformance of the sector.
Experts cited the competitive advantages of India. Ajit Pai of Ernst & Young spotlighted that the construction equipment industry in India is growing faster than many major economies of the world. Exports are growing at over twice as fast as the domestic market.
EXCON 2025 highlighted new technologies in the form of digital machines, or sustainable and energy-efficient equipment. Ramesh Palagiri, President Designate of ICEMA, pointed out that all such advancements have positioned India as an innovator, shaping the future of construction technologies, not just a manufacturer.
Looking ahead, the government representatives sketched ambitious targets on manufacturing. Neeraj Huddar from NITI Aayog said that the attainment of a $5.1 trillion manufacturing GDP would have to involve purposive deployment of frontier technologies with focused policy support in chosen areas.
This session brought together government, industry, and academia to deliberate on the road map for making India a global export hub in the construction equipment sector, so that in times to come, India combines manufacturing excellence with technological innovation on the world stage.
