The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, India’s longest expressway under development, will take two more years to complete. The original deadline, March 2024, shifted earlier to October 2025, but current progress suggests final completion may not happen before 2027.
Construction delays in Gujarat are the main cause. In that state, three stretches, totalling 87 km, have hit major roadblocks:
The project, broken into multiple packages, moved at different paces because bids were awarded at different times. While many parts saw smooth work, some packages in Gujarat stalled, which dragged the overall timeline.
To push the project forward, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari conducted a review meeting this week. He instructed teams to accelerate construction, especially in lagging zones.
The expressway, once operational, will cut travel time between Delhi and Mumbai to just 12 hours. It will pass through six states: Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
Haryana has completed its stretch. Rajasthan is on track, with all sections expected ready by March-April 2026. In Maharashtra, most packages will be done by the end of 2025, except a 21-km link to Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Gujarat, the biggest bottleneck, remains under intense pressure to improve pace.
If all goes well, travelers may drive non-stop from Delhi to Vadodara by March 2026. However, full expressway use—from Delhi to Mumbai—may not be possible before 2027.
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, estimated to cost ₹1 lakh crore, is a key infrastructure push for India. Once ready, it will: Boost logistics speed, Ease traffic on existing highways, and Support economic growth in the corridor.
Each segment of this road supports a larger goal: to create a faster, smoother, and more reliable transport link between two of India’s most important cities.
